Why ropes smell? Let’s discover the Jute Batching Oil

Very quick video to answer to whoever tells me that on the ropes they use for bondage, when they are new, they smell like petroleum.
What is this smell?

The smell is due to “jute batching oil”, a mineral oil used – diluted – to moisten the natural fibre during the spinning phase.

Is this oil toxic?
